Organised a Symposium on
Manipuri Oral Poetry: Performance and Aesthetics
on Saturday, 4th November 2017 at 11.00 am
in Hall No.4, Janata College Kabuganj

The Regional Office of the Sahitya Akademi, Kolkata, in association with the Department of Manipuri, Janata College Kabuganj, Cachar organised a Symposium on “ Manipuri Oral Poetry: Performance and Aesthetics” on Saturday 4 November, 2017. In the Inaugural session, Shri Gautam Paul, Officer-in-charge, Sahitya Akademi Regional Centre Kolkata delivered the welcome address and shared his views on the rich culture of Manipuri poetry. He also appreciated the department for organizing such a symposium in this rural college other than University and G. C. College which is in the heart of the town. He further, said that Manipuri oral poetry is very rich and given a great impact on Modern Manipuri literature. Prof. H. Behari Singh, Convenor, Manipuri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi delivered the introductory address and highlighted the need for conducting such a symposium which highlights the rich literature, culture and oral tradition of Manipuri. Retired Professor of the College Prof. M. Babaton Singha, who was the Chief Guest, shared his views on Manipuri oral poetry and its importance in the Modern Manipuri literature. Sri. Subhas Chandra Nath, Principal (in-charge) of Janata College delivered the presidential address. Dr. Usha Rani Sharma, Head department of Manipuri department proposed the vote of thanks
The first academic session which was chaired by Prof. H. Behari Singh, three noted scholars Dr. N. Bidyasagar Singh, Dr. L. Nipamacha Singh and Mrs. H. Anita Singha presented their papers on “Impact of Oral Poetry on Contemporary Manipuri Poetry”, “Social Contents in Manipuri Oral Poetry” and “ Oral Poetry in Khamba Thoibi” respectively. After the session there was an interactive session where Mr. L. Manglemba Singha, Retired College Librarian raised questions on the topic and the scholars responded well. After that the Chair person summed up the first session.
The second academic session which was chaired by Prof. M. Babaton Singha, three noted scholars Dr. Usha Rani Sharma, Mr. Ch. Manikumar Singha and Mr. O. loyangamba Singha presented their papers on “Different styles and verses in Manipuri Oral Poetry”, “Existence of ballad in Manipuri Oral Poetry” and “ Religious oral poetry and Manipuri Literature” respectively. After the session there was an interactive session among the participants. The literary symposium on the oral poetry was concluded with grand success.
